Auto Loss Procedures
We're sorry to hear that you've had a loss. Be aware that it is impossible to determine if your loss is covered until your policy is reviewed. Your agent will do this when you call during business hours to report your loss. Also a check can be made to see if any deductibles apply. If your loss IS covered, the claims adjuster will do his/her best to promptly pay for your loss. The adjusting process will be moved along as quickly as possible but be prepared for the inconvenience most losses cause to your normal routine. While waiting to call with a full report these guidelines may help.
Our first concern is the same as yours, that any injured persons are being taken care of properly. We trust that you have already seen to that. Please be sure to keep all bills so they can be reviewed by the adjuster. Many of these may be covered and you will be repaid.
The next concern is that the loss not grow bigger. Take reasonable steps to protect your property, damaged or not, from further loss or damage. That may mean moving the damaged items into your home or garage etc. Again keep your bills, they MAY be covered by the insurance.
Plan to take your damaged vehicle to a repair shop as soon as possible to get an estimate. If your automobile is damaged to the extent that it can not be driven safely have it towed to a repair facility where an estimate can be written. Normally wrecker services have a fenced holding area where the vehicle can be stored securely and it will normally be stored there until the repair shop you select is open. If it appears to be a total loss have the wrecker service hold the vehicle so it can be inspected by the claims adjuster in the secured lot. Be sure to remove your personal possessions from the car as soon as possible. If the vehicle is to be towed to a repair facility, try to call the repair garage during their business hours requesting an estimate be written. This will speed up the adjusting process.
If you are one of our clients check the 'Reporting Losses and other help' page for toll free claim numbers or you can call your agent as soon as possible during business hours so a formal claim report can be made (Nothing gets started until the paperwork is prepared). While making the report you can find out if your loss is covered and what deductibles apply if any. If you are one of our clients and your call to us involves a toll, call us collect.
